Between the 18th and the 21st of February 2020 a seismological experiment was carried out in the city of Durres, Albania with the collaboration of the Institute of Engineering Seismology & Earthquake Engineering, Thessaloniki Greece (ITSAK-EPPO) and the Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment, Polytechnic University of Tirana (IGEWE-PUT).

During the experiment about 80 single station ambient noise measurements were performed in the city of Durres, with emphasis on heavily affected areas by the 26th of November 2019 earthquake (M6.4).

The aim of this experiment is to estimate the soil fundamental period spatial variation within the city of Durres as well as the relative amplification of ground motion by future earthquakes. Results of the experiment, along with additional geophysical & geotechnical prospecting, would contribute to a realistic microzonation map of the Durres city.

Participants in the experiment were research staff from both contributing organizations, namely:

  • Dr. N. Theodoulidis (Research Director - ITSAK-EPPO),
  • I. Grendas (PhD student – ITSAK-EPPO),
  • Prof. Ll. Duni (IGEWE-PUT),
  • Prof. N. Kuka (IGEWE-PUT),
  • Prof. Assoc. R. Koçi (IGEWE-PUT),
  • Dr. E. Dushi (IGEWE-PUT) and
  • MSc. O. Gjuzi (IGEWE-PUT)
